In the Beginning

Genesis 127 [widescreen]

Genesis 1:1 – 2:25

Today’s reading is about the creation. This is a passage that is probably very familiar to all of you but I wanted to point out some of the things that stood out to me.

The verses that I focused on were Genesis 1:25-28.

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

The first thing that I want to point out is that God says, “Let us make mankind in our image”. Notice the “us” is plural. This means that all three members of the trinity were involved in the creation. We see that “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1) and “the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters” (Genesis 1:2). We also see Jesus, known as the Word, is shown “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:1).

Next is that we were “created in his own image”. Imagine that. We are unique in creation to be made in God’s image. He created us as tri-une beings with a spirit, a soul (mind, will and emotions) and a body. We have the ability to reason and create just like our heavenly Father. We are spiritual beings as well as physical ones. He created us to be in relationship with Him and each other.

The first thing God did after creating us was to bless us and give us some of His authority and power over creation. What does this mean to me personally? That God loves me and wants me to “have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). God created all things that I would need so that I would be blessed and have a relationship with Him. He did that for you too. When we realize our value, we can overcome any obstacles life may throw our way.
